Dubbo Base Hospitalis celebrating the addition of seven more midwives to its workforce.

Seven Registered Nurses will graduate today (Friday, 20 April 2012) as fully qualified Midwives and four are now working in the Maternity Unit at Dubbo Base Hospital.

The graduates recently completed training which consisted of a 12 month clinical component at Dubbo Base Hospital and theory at Charles Sturt University Wagga Wagga.

 “Congratulations are extended to all of the graduates on their achievement and we wish them well in their future endeavours,” said Mrs Judi Yeo and Mrs Pritty Joseph, Clinical Midwifery Educators, Dubbo Base Hospital Maternity Unit.

“The students have completed what is commonly acknowledged to be a demanding course which includes many hours of study time required to meet the numerous essential components,” said Mrs Joseph.

Mrs Yeo said the Registered Nurses came to Midwifery from many different fields of nursing and three students had relocated to Dubbo to complete the course whilst other students faced the challenges of travelling, and also starting their own family whilst working at Dubbo Base. “Their commitment to midwifery is outstanding.”

Mrs Yeo said the graduates join a very dedicated, highly skilled and enthusiastic team at Dubbo Base Hospital.

“They will be joining a team who are helping expecting mums and dads through a very exciting and demanding time of their lives,” she said.

“Midwives play a crucial caring role in the health service, and in sometimes challenging circumstances,” she said.

The Health Service will acknowledge their achievement with a celebratory afternoon tea in DBH Maternity Ward today (Friday, 20 April) at which an Academic and Proficiency Award will be presented. The Proficiency Award is presented by Dr Tony Geraghty in honour of the late Dr Ian Locke, the first paediatrician in the area.

Currently Dubbo Base Hospital has four new students studying for their midwifery qualification. With the addition of the second educator Mrs Pritty Joseph we are hoping to train additional student in the future.
