Orange and Region

Orange is a city of nearly 40,000 people in the Central West region of NSW and it is a major provincial centre for many smaller regional towns. Bathurst is a similar sized city at around 35,000 people.

Both cities have strong growth patterns and have thriving farming communities, health services and mining industries. Many smaller towns are in the region such as Forbes and Parkes, Oberon and Condobolin. The region is home to the Wiradjuri Nation.

Regional Services

The management focus for MHDA for the region is located on the Bloomfield Campus, Orange Health Service, Forest Road, Orange. The Regional Manager and the executive team take responsibility for both Mental Health and Drug & Alcohol services in Orange and across the region. The Manager is also responsible for the operation of the MHDA inpatient units Bloomfield Tertiary MHDA Centre  and the Bathurst MHDA inpatient unit.

                                             

A large community MHDA service operates out of Orange and outreaches to Orange and Blayney, Lucknow, Spring Hill, Millthorpe, Molong

There are also residential rehabilitation and support services in Orange, Bathurst and smaller towns operated by the MHDA service and also by non-government services in partnership with MHDA.

Bathurst also has a community MHDA service which provides outreach tocovers Oberon and other nearby locations.

There are also smaller community MHDA teams:

The Forbes/Parkes/Condobolin Team is based in Parkes and also supports the communities of Lake Cargellico/Peak Hill, Tottenham, Trundle and Tullamore.   

The Cowra Team provides services to Grenfell, Canowindra and other smaller locations.

General:

After-hours emergency and extended care service

Present at your local hospital for emergency assessment service.

Crisis triaging is accessed through the Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511.

The Assessment Team is available in Orange on 02 6360 8000 from 8.30am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday and Cadia House on 02 6363 1744 Monday to Friday from 8.30am - 8.30pm and Weekends on 02 6363 1744 from 8.30am - 4.30pm.
 
Health Promotion Prevention and Early Intervention:
This team is based in Orange to support clinical teams in the region and to enhance well being in the community with such programs as the Family and Carer Mental Health Program, Social Inclusion Programs, Arts and Health, Physical Health Programs, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), Specialist Mental Health Services for Older People, Drug & Alcohol and community awareness campaigns.
Infant, Child, Youth and Family (ICYF) Mental Health Team:
This is a service conducting assessment, care coordination and counselling, and early intervention programs such as SAFESTART for mothers and babies and Got It a program for young people. There are a small number of ICYF workers in the regional towns. ICYF is linked as a specialist stream across the District and accesses Bloomfield in Orange for the acute child and adolescent inpatient unit.

Adult Mental Health Teams:
Services for adults range from the crisis and intake work of the acute care team, to the care coordination team, consultation liaison team in the Orange and Bathurst hospitals, psychiatry outreach services, the community support team, education/therapy/counselling services, residential rehabilitation and the adult inpatient units at Bathurst and Bloomfield.

In the smaller Mental Health Drug & Alcohol teams adult Mental Health services provide triaging and assessment, care coordination and support.

Programs are also offered throughout the region in conjunction with local community managed organisations (CMO). These include the Housing and Accommodation Support Initiative or HASI.
Specialist Mental Health Services for Older People (SMHSOP):
This team is also part of a specialist clinical stream across the District and offers assessment and care coordination, challenging behaviours program, and access to acute or non acute inpatient care at Bloomfield. It works closely with aged care services and also has single workers in some towns across the region.
Drug & Alcohol Services:
Workers are mainly placed in Orange and Bathurst but outreach to other towns and are also part of teams in smaller centres such as Parkes. Teams offer assessment and counselling, the MERIT Court Diversion Program, Drug & Alcohol consultation liaison at Orange and Bathurst hospitals, and the Opioid Treatment Program.

Mental Health Adult Inpatient Unit, Bathurst:
A 10 bed facility provides non acute voluntary psychiatric care with symptom stabilisation and rehabilitation interventions; with access to medium term and intensive care inpatient units at Bloomfield, Orange.
